Ros Smith cares about students. Her career spanned 35 years as a teacher, principal and Central Service supervisor with Edmonton Public Schools. Her passion for children was demonstrated by her unwavering focus on student achievement.
Ros understood that every parent wanted the best education possible for their child. Parents worked hard each day to put food on the table and pay school fees, while guiding their child through public education. Ros’ ability to identify professionals to assist students left families feeling valued and respected.
As a school leader, Ros recognized the need to be fiscally responsible. Using a transparent and collaborative support to budgeting, the collective voice of the school community was heard. This resulted in high student achievement.
Ros’ enhanced her leadership skills as a Central Service Supervisor. She reviewed, wrote and implemented policy, which enhanced academic programming, the safety of students and inclusion.
Ros understood the rewards and challenges of both old and new communities. She knew that the engagement of staff and community stakeholders contributed to student success. The support for appropriate funding must continue. Ros’ message is simple. Placing students first is a priority.
The Role of Trustee for Ros
The Board of Trustees is accountable to Alberta Education to maintain a focus on student achievement. Decisions regarding policy and the use of provincially allocated resources are part of the Board’s mandate. The superintendent is responsible for the daily management of schools. The work of the trustee is to be an active ongoing voice of parents, students and community. This work may not be accomplished without trust and respect. Ros possesses the skills, knowledge and attitudes to be a successful trustee.
